Stefan Jacoby: New CEO at Volkswagen

Stefan Jacoby, just appointed CEO of Volkswagen of America, surprised everyone. On his 6th day, he announced a move of headquarters from Michigan to Virginia, cut 500 jobs, and laid out a plan to triple Volkswagen's North American sales in 8 years.

Volkswagen sales are expected to be around 235K in 2007. This is essentially identical to 2006 sales. VW sold 100,000 more cars just 5 years ago.

Volkswagens incentive spending is above average. Jetta, Passat, Touareg, and Beetle have substantial buyer incentives, yet these are the core of the ambitious plan.

This seems like a recipe for failure to me.

Will the German brass give the new guy a free reign? Or continue the German obsession with micro-management that ruined Chrysler?
